Great Debaters free essay sample

The Great Debaters The movie Great Debaters was about a debate team from Wiley College in Texas. They were a very good debate team, only losing one match before facing and defeating the national champs, Harvard University. When they faced Harvard they didn’t have their coach or their best debater, but a young boy named James stepped up and defeated the champs. The message of the film to me is, if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything. After professor Tolson was arrested for a trumped charge and set free, they continued to debate. After one of their teammates walked out on them, they pressed on. Professor Tolson just kept sending letters to Harvard, he never stopped. I think that was God’s plan for them from the start. One of the social injustices of our day that I do not agree with, is the law that you must wear a helmet when riding on a motorcycle. If you get in a car accident while on a motorcycle, you are most likely to get injured even if you are wearing a helmet. If you are riding a motorcycle going 70 mph and you fall, that helmet will not do anything. Plus not to mention helmet hair, it ruins the ‘do’. Wiley College debaters would most likely take the side of no helmet, but that’s what I’m guessing. Overall I really enjoyed the movie. I liked the message of the film; it hit all the points that it needed to hit about social injustices. Something I never knew was that they were the first black college to face and defeat Harvard. I never realized how racist America really was back then and how people got away with doing that stuff. The only problem I had with the movie was how they protrayed southern white males. They made us look so stupid with everything we did. I mean I know we weren’t the smartest people in the world but they didn’t have to make us sound and look mentally challenged.
